When most people think about helping others, prisoners aren’t often the ‘others’ they choose. You only have to read the news to discover that most people think prisoners are ‘bad people’ who have brought their situation on themselves. How easy it is to judge from a distance!
However, at the Saracens Foundation, we believe that in prison, just as in our communities, the impact of rugby can be far-reaching. Participation can greatly improve the attitudes, behaviour and prospects of people serving a prison sentence before and after their release. Using rugby as a ‘hook’ provides us with a valuable and unique opportunity to engage with even the most challenging of young people caught up in a cycle of offending and imprisonment.
